Once reopened, our 21-room inn, coffee shop, full-service restaurant, bar, and outdoor spaces will be a central hub of activity for both locals and travelers in the Cuyama Valley. We are looking for energetic, passionate staff who are excited to help make the Buckhorn a warm and welcoming place in New Cuyama.

Purchasing, Hospitality & design intern

Fall Semester


We are looking to hire a part-time Purchasing, Hospitality, and Design Intern to assist with purchasing and renovation coordination for our hotel, Cuyama Buckhorn. This property is undergoing a full renovation that will transform the Buckhorn with renewed mid-century style and local partnerships. The renewed inn & grounds will feature a new lobby, event and meeting spaces, a glistening new pool, and more. The 21-room inn is also the site of a coffee shop, full-service restaurant and bar for both locals and travelers. The Purchasing, Hospitality & Design Intern will be based in iDGroup’s West Hollywood office, with occasional site visits to the hotel.

This is a fast-paced, hands-on opportunity to gain valuable skills within both the design and hospitality industries.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work closely with the Assistant Operations & Aesthetics Manager to coordinate renovation needs

  • Conduct research on vendors, pricing and design elements

  • Support the management team with purchasing design elements for the hotel

  • Assist with purchase logs and receipt organization

  • Track and organize deliveries for purchases

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • This internship is for college credit with a monthly stipend. Applicants are required to be a currently-enrolled college or university student working towards a degree.

HOTEL & RESTAURANT 
GENERAL MaNAGER

This opportunity would be the perfect fit for a visionary hotel and restaurant professional that is passionate about food and the art of hospitality. We are looking for someone who is energetic and passionate about hospitality and wants to create a warm and inviting place for our historic, revitalized Inn. The ideal candidate must be enthusiastic to push this project forward through the renovation and towards new initiatives and exciting improvements. We will need someone who is results driven, proactive and enjoys working in an entrepreneurial environment. The Hotel and Restaurant General Manager will collaborate with management on the decision-making of policies, goals, staffing and overall direction of Cuyama Buckhorn and will be responsible for the successful implementation of this extraordinary endeavor. Here is your chance to make your mark along with owners who are developing exciting programming to include food, music and art events to appeal to creative enthusiasts. 

responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing the day-to-day operations of the entire property

  • Hiring and personnel management of all staff

  • Providing continual training for all staff to ensure that service standards are consistently met

  • Providing leadership and direction to all departments

  • Monitoring and controlling hotel’s P&L, and overseeing restaurant financials, to ensure operational expenses and labor costs are met

  • Reporting financial reports and any issues that may arise to ownership

  • Developing creative ideas for the property to drive sales, improve the facility, increase staff engagement and morale, improve and create systems and processes, and improve guest experience

  • Collaborating and implementing marketing and sales initiatives with the owners and management team

  • Building positive relationships with guests, staff, potential clients, owners, suppliers, partners and members of the local community

  • Being available off-hours, when necessary

  • Willing and available to work weekends and holidays

QUALIFICATIONS:

Essential:

  • 3-4 years in a leadership role in hospitality, preferably a hotel with full service (BLD) and bar

  • Part of an opening team of a restaurant/hotel, or experience working at a property through a major renovation a major plus!

  • Strong understanding of the financials involved in operating a successful hotel and restaurant

  • A people person, with strong communication skills, who is able to build a collaborative team and trusting relationships

  • Strong leadership skills, management skills, customer relations skills, training skills, and project management skills

  • The successful candidate will need to live/relocate to Cuyama, CA. Housing will be provided for the right candidate

  • Can be a great opportunity for a couple, family or local farm / ranch family. A newly furnished 2 bed / 1 bath home near the property will be available for the Hotel & Restaurant General Manager and their family.

  • A strong interest in creative endeavors including the arts, music, and culinary arts a plus!

Physical Conditions:

  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 20 lbs.

The restaurant currently hosts events including, reunions, large birthday parties, car club lunches, and other private events, with the goal of expanding this department for weddings, retreats and larger gatherings. 


 

RESTAURANT MANAGER

One of our property’s most iconic elements is The Buckhorn Restaurant & Bar. The restaurant has many treasured favorites, such as the Santa Maria tri-tip grilled on the property’s cherished Red Oak grill. While The Buckhorn will always offer nostalgic classics, the eatery is also receiving updates, including the addition of the Buck Stop Coffee Shop and a more farm-to-table focused menu. The Buckhorn team is also working on a full catering and events department with banquet menu offerings. The restaurant currently hosts events including, reunions, large birthday parties, car club lunches, and other private events. 

We are looking for someone who is energetic and passionate about hospitality, who wants to help create a warm and inviting gathering place. They must be excited to push this project forward through the renovation and towards new initiatives. We will need someone who has leadership skills, is results driven, and will bring both creative and proactive spirit to their role. The Restaurant Manager will be collaborating in the decision-making of policies, goals, and direction of Cuyama Buckhorn and will be responsible for the successful implementation.

As the Restaurant Manager, you will be responsible for, but not limited to:

  • Managing the day-to-day restaurant operations with oversight of the entire property

  • Hiring and management of all staff

  • Conducting continual training to ensure that service standards are consistently met

  • Providing leadership and direction to all departments

  • Monitoring and controlling hotel’s P&L reporting against operational expense and labor cost guides

  • Report back to owners on financial reports and any issues that may arise

  • Creating ideas for the property to drive sales, improve the facility, and improve customer satisfaction

  • Increasing staff engagement and morale and improving guest experience

  • Collaborating and implementing marketing and sales initiatives with owners, management, and consultants

  • Building positive relationships with guests, staff, suppliers, and members of the local community and strengthen The Buckhorn’s partnerships

  • Availability during off-hours, when necessary

  • Overseeing all inventory, ordering and assisting in sourcing in alignment of the new locally sourced business model for all F&B offerings

  • Assisting with the creation of SOPs, service guides, training guides, etc. and ensuring all are continually followed and enforced

qualifications:

  • 3-4 years in a leadership role in hospitality, preferably a full-service (BLD) and bar environment

  • Has been on an opening team of a restaurant and/or hotel, a plus!

  • Good understanding of the financials in a hotel and restaurant setting

  • Ability to build a collaborative team and foster trusting relationships

  • Enthusiastic, driven, detail-oriented, and strong project management skills

  • Willing to relocate to Cuyama, CA or commute from a surrounding town/city

We are looking for a busser who is hardworking, dependable and has an interest in hospitality/customer service to help make Cuyama Buckhorn a warm and inviting place for the city of New Cuyama and visiting guests. 

Qualifications:

  • Past Restaurant Experience (a major plus, but not required)  

  • Dependable, driven and timely

  • Ability to work independently and on a team

  • Eagerness to explore other areas of our business and be cross-trained in other departments (i.e. serving, barista or bartending)

  • California Food Handlers permit on file or obtained within 30 days of hire

We are looking for a bartender to work on weekends and during special events at our restaurant and inn. Our ideal candidate is energetic, charismatic, and passionate about hospitality and drinks to help create a warm and welcoming place for the city of New Cuyama and visitors, alike.

  • Must have bartending experience and knowledge of beers, cocktails, and wines

  • Dependable, driven, and punctual

  • Ability to work independently, as well as a part of a team

We are looking to hire a line-cook who is energetic and passionate about hospitality and cooking and wants to help create a warm and welcoming place for the city of New Cuyama and visiting guests.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepares a variety of meats, seafood, poultry, vegetables and other food items for cooking in broilers, ovens, grills, fryers and a variety of other kitchen equipment

  • Assumes 100% responsibility for the quality of products served

  • Knows and complies consistently with instructed portion sizes, cooking methods, quality standards, and kitchen rules, policies, and procedures

  • Excited to try new things and eagerness to learn

  • Assists Executive Chef with orders and tracking of food quantities

  • Preps, stocks and maintains sufficient levels of food products at line stations to assure a smooth service period

  • Portions food products before cooking according to standard portion sizes and recipe specifications

  • Maintains a clean and sanitary work station area including tables, shelves, grills, broilers, fryers, pasta cookers, sauté burners, convection oven, flat top range, and refrigeration equipment

  • Prepares item for broiling, grilling, frying, sautéing or other cooking methods by portioning, battering, breading, seasoning and marinating

  • Follows proper plate presentation and garnish set up for all dishes

  • Follows sanitation guidelines set forth by Health Department and Executive Chef

  • Handles, stores and rotates all products properly to ensure that the kitchen is fully stocked and that all food being served is as fresh as possible

  • Assists in food prep assignments during off-peak periods as needed

  • Closes the kitchen properly and follows the closing checklist for kitchen stations. Assists others in closing the kitchen

  • Attend all scheduled employee meetings and staff outings

  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Chef or manager-on-duty

QUALIFICATIONs:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Passion for cooking

  • 0-2 years varied experience in kitchen preparation and cooking

  • Must live or be able to commute to New Cuyama on a regular basis

  • Must be able to communicate clearly with managers, kitchen and dining room personnel

server/barista

This position is a barista/server flex position, according to the changing demands of The Buckhorn. Everyday, you’ll be helping to build community and create connections with locals and travelers, either behind our brand new coffee bar or in our historic restaurant. We are looking for someone who is energetic and passionate about hospitality and wants to create a warm and welcoming place for the locals and visitors, alike. 

Qualifications:

  • Past restaurant experience

  • Ability to handle money and operate reservation and POS systems

  • Can stay level headed and efficient during rushes and down time

  • Beverage prep work

  • Latte art (a major plus!)

  • Knowledge of food industry trends and menu creation (a major plus!) 

  • Past experience in working events within restaurants (a major plus!)

  • California Food Handler Card (can be acquired during training)

This position will include maintaining a clean space in our restaurant, and in 21 guest rooms once we reopen our inn after renovations. We are looking for someone who is hardworking and dependable to help make Cuyama Buckhorn a warm, clean and inviting place for all of our guests.
